Since September 2009, bars and restaurants in the United Kingdom and parts of the United States have been facing a shortage of Angostura bitters, an essential ingredient in such cocktails Manhattans and Old-Fashioneds. To remedy the situation, Angostura appointed Mizkan Americas Inc., a subsidiary of the Mizkan Group Corp. in Japan, to distribute Angostura bitters exclusively in the U.S.

The top players from all three tiers of the U.S. drinks industry gathered in New York City on September 24th for Market Watch magazine’s 2009 Leaders Awards banquet, which honors the nation’s most accomplished retailers. Charles Sonnenberg, owner of Nashville-based Frugal MacDoogal, was named the Market Watch 2009 “Retailer of the Year.”
