Argentine wine’s top two export markets, the United States and Canada
respectively, drove a nearly 10% increase in export value to $585
million for the South American nation in 2009, according to the Wines
of Argentina trade group. Argentina’s export volume rose 4% to 24.3
million cases, boosted by 32% and 47% jumps in the U.S. and Canada,
respectively, offsetting declines in its three next-largest markets—
the U.K. (down 12%), Brazil (down 1%) and the Netherlands (down 6%).
By value, exports to the U.S. vaulted 30% to $190 million, while
shipments to Canada were valued at $72 million, a 37% increase. The
growing popularity of Malbec among North American consumers—as well as
consumer-friendly pricing of Argentine wines—contributed to the
uptick.
Argentina’s Malbec shipments, representing about 40% of its export
sales, were up 20% by value and 22% by volume for the year.
Syrah/Malbec combination wines were also on the upswing in 2009,
rising 54% in value.
