The Edrington Group, which has long produced Cutty Sark, and distributed it in a host of key markets, will now own the storied but sagging Scotch whisky brand. Earlier this month, Edrington acquired Cutty Sark from Berry Bros & Rudd (BB&R), while BB&R in turn purchased The Glenrothes single malt brand from Edrington.

Edrington will retain ownership of The Glenrothes distillery, and will also continue to distribute both Cutty Sark and The Glenrothes (which sells around 40,000 cases globally and, like Cutty Sark, is handled by Skyy Spirits in the U.S.) in many key markets, often via its 50/50 alliance with Beam Global, which replaced Maxxium, the former joint venture between Edrington, Beam, V&S and Remy Cointreau. In Greece, Cutty Sark’s second-largest market behind Spain (where Maxxium Espana, part of the Edrington-Beam alliance, will continue handling the Scotch brand, which has lost more than one-third of its global volume over the past two years), the brand will remain with WS Karoulias, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BB&R.
