Global Champagne sales were off 9% by volume to 293.3 million bottles
(24.4m cases) and 17% by value in 2009, according to the CIVC. In
France, the category was flat at 181 million bottles, but exports to
other European countries fell 17.4% to 70.6 million bottles, with the
U.K., Italy and Spain declining significantly.

Exports outside the European Union were down 25% to 41.7 million
bottles, as slumps in the U.S. and Japan dragged down results.
Meanwhile, growth in the BRIC markets of Brazil, Russia, India and
China didn’t progress to the level anticipated. Still, the business is
currently trending positively, as total Champagne volume rose a robust
6% in 2009’s last two months. France and the U.K. in particular
rebounded at year-end, although much of that growth appears
attributable to the lower end of the market.
