Frederick Wildman and Sons is set to import John Rexer’s Ilegal Mezcal, an artisanal spirit crafted in Tlacolula, Mexico. Ilegal is made from 100% Espadin agave, compared to the blue agave that is used in the production of Tequila. FWS will focus on major markets like Florida, New York, Texas and Illinois as well as many other states along the West Coast and in the Southwest. Ilegal’s range will include Joven ($55 per 750ml), Reposado ($70), and Añejo ($110) offerings.

Tequila has long stood as the spirit representative of Mexico in the eyes of the U.S. consumer, and during the past decade, its expanded appeal as a crafted spirit and super-premium product has helped increase awareness of the Mezcal category. Ilegal should be welcome in the many bars and restaurants that offer extensive Tequila and Mezcal menus; however, it's entering the U.S. during a time that has been hard on even the most successful and established super-premium spirits. Patrón, for example, saw its growth slow to 1% during 2009 after years of explosive expansion.
